This is the story of the extraordinary Hunter J. Marcus (my "four-legged son"). Hunter died in 2017 at the age of 15 years and three months.
He was a golden retriever and the typical lifespan for a "golden" is 10-12 years, so he definitely had high mileage.
His death was not sudden, violent nor unexpected--but was nonetheless tragic. I could not be more miserable because of the loss of a human child.
I never thought of Hunter as a pet, and certainly not as a possession. He was a housemate, child, co-conspirator, fellow traveler, playmate and--most of all--my best buddy. He soared like an eagle, swam like a porpoise, ate like a shark and often thought like a human.
Hunter understood dozens of English words and was very obedient--when he chose to be. Golden retrievers are very smart, and very independent. Hunter knew exactly what he was supposed to do in any situation--and sometimes he was willing to do what he was supposed to do. We rewarded bad behavior because anything a dog does is cute!
This book is a memorial, but it's fun, not morbid. Enjoy!
In addition to Hunter's life story, the book includes, advice, humor, many cute photos and even emails from Doggie Heaven. It's a dog book that even cat fans will enjoy.

Michael N. Marcus is every dog's dream owner . . . and every dog trainer's worst nightmare. Somehow, in breaking all the rules, he managed to forge an incredible bond with his beloved Golden Retriever that seemed to work to the benefit of the entire family. In this delicious book, he proudly flaunts all the rules of dog behavior as he describes the antics of Hunter, the canine conniver who wrapped Michael around his little toe and yanked the knot tight. With Hunter now sadly departed, Michael reminisces about his time with his four-legged friend. If you have a dog, or even just a heart, you will fall in love with this book. Just take the advice with a grain of salt.
I just finished the heartwarming book about Hunter, the Golden Retriever. Full disclosure I know Michael only through Facebook and would not have given any review if I disliked the book. As a rescue dog owner (Freddy the 9 lb rescue poodle), I loved reading about how intelligent Hunter was & spoiling is a way of life (the water bowl in bed was hysterical). The joy Hunter brought to everyone is a lesson that we humans can learn. I am passing on the book to younger members of the generation as a teaching tool on how to love and care for the canine species.
My dog, daughter and I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Marcus at the end of the summer at a local artisan spring well. This book is both quirky and fun that both my daughter and I enjoyed reading as much as we enjoyed talking with him.
